Demand for diving in Larnaca gets back on track in 2021

Most diving companies have local clients, but many also rely on tourists. There are not many statistics about diving companies and how they managed the coronavirus pandemic, but one thing that is showing us is that the dive industry is in demand again. Greece remains one of the top choices for quality diving experiences.

Current coronavirus restrictions for travelling to Greece outside the European Union is extended for an additional two weeks, until 26 November 2021. This means that travellers from forty-one countries have been removed from the ban, which includes Australia to Monaco and Saudi Arabia to the United Kingdom and the United States. All passengers entering Greece must complete a Passenger Locator Form before arriving in the country, along with proof of vaccination and a negative PCR test.

Diving companies were hard hit during the coronavirus pandemic over the past year with airlines cancelling flights. Since the ban lifted for forty-one countries, the demand for diving in Larnaca has risen. Local diving remained upbeat during the pandemic, but international travel took a nosedive, coming to a standstill. As a result, many Greek diving schools saw a surge in demand from local clients.

With more people vacationing in their own countries, more people tried new and exciting activities, which included taking advantage of the fantastic diving opportunities in Larnaca. An interesting result was the decline in casual divings and an increase in core divers, those who go diving only when on vacation, to those that are diving regularly.

Steve Theakston, the Owner at Pissouri Bay Divers, a leading school for diving in Larnaca, said “While we saw an almost five per cent decrease in diving participation last year, we saw a positive increase in local clients learning how to dive and diving more regularly. With forty-one countries now able to visit Greece today, we are seeing our vacation clients coming back, which is an upward turn and shows that diving in Larnaca is back on track with a growing demand for the coming weeks and months.”

Pissouri Bay Divers remains a leading dive school offering a range of courses and packages for locals and visitors who want to explore the amazing underwater world of Greece in 2021.
