Many of today’s websites are dedicated to promoting how wonderful a particular company is and why someone should choose them over their competition. We have recently taken a different approach and have just launched our new website which is designed to answer the most common questions we hear from our clients. Why do I need to test and tag? And, How should it be done?

Without the answers to these two important questions it is difficult for anyone to know they are choosing the right service provider that is going to meet their needs and provide the required services. Our new website now addresses these two questions without all of the fanfare of how good we think we are.

Why is this so important? Well, in New Zealand the onus is on the responsible person in the organisation or business to select a test and tag service provider who is competent to carry out their electrical testing and tagging . Now this can be difficult if this person is not experience or knowledgeable in this area and relies solely on either the reputation of the service company or the quality of their presentation. This can easily lead to selection of a service provider who offers a cheap price but doesn’t carry out the testing correctly. The Electrical (Safety) Regulations 2010 provide a definition of when fittings and appliances in use are deemed to be electrically safe, and list testing and tagging in accordance with the standard, AS/NZS 3760 In-service safety inspection and testing of electrical equipment, as the only documented method of complying with this requirement.

Within this standard, strict criteria are required in order to inspect, test and certify the safety of electrical appliances provided for use by employees and the general public. Unfortunately not all service providers test to this standard and as a result the customer can be unaware as to exactly how their testing has been carried out. This can cause issues should an accident occur as it is the client’s responsibility to prove their testing has been carried out correctly and by a competent person.

Jim’s Test & Tag is New Zealand’s leading test and tag specialist service provider and all of our electrical testing is carried out in accordance with AS/NZ 3760:2010, the latest version of the standard. In order to provide the most useful information to those needing our services, we have provided a comparison sheet on the HOW page of our website, which can be downloaded free of charge to compare the services we provide with any other service provider. We believe that providing this information assists our clients understand better, the requirements of testing in accordance with the above standard and allow them to make an educated decision as to who to entrust their electrical safety with.

Another novel feature of our service is that we offer to provide our clients with a ‘Test Drive’ of our services so they can see first-hand how we perform our testing and the details provided in the subsequent reporting that is provided upon completion of testing. There is no charge or obligation for this service, where we test a small number of items in a particular area and demonstration the process of testing and tagging for those that are not familiar with the requirements. We find that this helps the person understand what is involved and more often than not we are invited to continue testing the remainder of the businesses equipment based on the quality of our demonstration. We believe this is an important step in the process to help businesses select the right test and tag service provider for them.

Most businesses are likely to need the services of someone like us as we all have electrical equipment to some degree in our organisation. To learn more about the requirements and how the electrical testing should be done please visit our site www.jimstestandtag.co.nz to learn more and don’t forget to download our free services comparison sheet to further assisting in selecting the right service provider for test and tag.
