Risk Factors for Prostate Cancer

Dr. Gregory Echt explains the risk factors for prostate cancer.

Irving, Texas - Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer and second only to lung cancer in cancer-related deaths among men in the United States. Prostate cancer is silent. The main reason behind this is that the awareness amongst men about prostate cancer is low.

“Nobody wants to get prostate cancer. That being said, everyone should all be aware of what the risk factors are for prostate cancer,” Says Dr. Echt. “If you think you are at a higher risk for prostate cancer, you should become familiar with what factors tend to increase the likelihood that you will develop the disease.”

Some of the risk factors for prostate cancer include:

• Age: Age is the leading risk factor for prostate cancer, and the disease is rare in men under 45 years of age. The probability of developing this disease increases significantly with age.

• Family history: The risk is higher if one of the family members has had prostate cancer.

• Specific prostate changes: Men with cells classified as high-grade prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia may present a more significant risk of cancer. Such changes have prostate cells under the microscope.

• Race: Prostate cancer is more common in African-Americans than in white men, but is less common in Asians and American Indians.

• Diet: Some researches suggest that men who consume a diet high in animal fat or meat may have a higher risk of cancer. Men who consume food rich in fruits and vegetables may have a lower chance.

“There are other risk factors of prostate cancer that have not been clinically proven but may very well influence the cells in the body. Obesity is a problem and the cause of a variety of medical problems,” says Dr. Echt. “Studies have been done on how obesity affects men, and it has been found that obese patients are at a higher risk of getting prostate cancer, not having diagnosed until it is in the late stages of the disease and dying from it.”

Individuals who have prostate cancer should look for reliable cancer clinics for diagnosis and treatment.
