Understanding the Potential Treatment Side Effects of Prostate Cancer

Dr. Echt gives an in-depth explanation of the treatment side effects of prostate cancer.

Irving, Texas – The prostate is close to several vital body organs, which can be affected by prostate cancer and its treatments. The bowel, urinary and sexual functioning of the body are the most effected. Selecting treatment for prostate cancer is a complicated process for both patient and doctor. While the disease is highly treatable, each intervention presents its own potential side effects that may vary from patient to patient. Understanding these potential side effects will help the patient and doctor to choose the most preferred intervention.

“Early management of the side effects of prostate cancer helps patients to live longer and better lives,” explained Dr. Echt. “As you undergo treatment, it is important that you speak to your doctors about any side effects you may be experiencing. This will help them help you manage your side effects early and prevent more downstream complications.”

Below are some of the side effects of prostate cancer treatments you need to understand:

• Infertility –It is very difficult for a man to retain the ability to father children through sexual intercourse after undergoing the initial treatment for prostate cancer. During a prostatectomy, the prostate and seminal vesicles surrounding it are removed. These seminal vesicles, together with the prostate provide semen that carries the sperm out of the penis during ejaculation. Removal of these organs during surgery makes it impossible to ejaculate. Radiation therapy also impairs fertility. In most cases, artificial insemination becomes the only option for men who still want children after their treatment.

• Erectile dysfunction – Erectile dysfunction is the most common side effect after the treatment of prostate cancer. The blood vessels and nerves that control physical erection are quite delicate and any subjection to trauma results to changes. The main components of erectile dysfunction affected by treatment include libido (sex drive), which is affected by hormone therapy and other treatments that decrease testosterone, the mechanical ability which is affected by surgery/radiation therapy, orgasm difficulties due to low libido, and minimal or no ejaculation. Several oral and alternative treatments can be used for erectile dysfunction side effects. However, men with baseline erectile dysfunction or other diseases like diabetes or vascular disease that impair your ability to maintain an erection may not be able to recover erectile functionality at all after treatment.
