A second year engineering apprentice at the MTC’s new Lloyds Bank Advanced Manufacturing Training Centre (AMTC) near Coventry, has been named as runner-up Apprentice of the Year in the Large Employer category of this year’s City of Coventry Freeman’s Guild Awards.

Joining finalists at the prestigious ceremony held recently at the Guild Hall in Coventry, 18 year-old Teri-Ann McPherson from Tile Hill in Coventry collected her award from the Lord Mayor of Coventry and President of the Guild, Councillor Michael Hammon.

“Once again we have seen an extremely high calibre of applicants and the shortlisting panels’ decision was a very difficult one, as there were so many worthy finalists,” said Enterprise Committee member, Judy Ryder. “Both Teri-Ann’s application and the interview she gave to the judging panel were very impressive; she should feel extremely proud to have reached the final.”

The purpose of the Guild Awards is to celebrate the achievements of local young people who are either apprentices or trainees and who are currently undertaking a contracted training programme linked to a recognised career path.

“We’re delighted that Teri-Ann was honored in these awards,” said Paul Rowlett, managing director of the AMTC. “She’s shown real commitment to her learning, regularly challenging herself outside her comfort zone to maximise her achievements.

“As a STEMnet ambassador, Teri-Ann is involved in a whole host of activities with schools and colleges which are making great strides in encouraging more girls to consider engineering as a career. These are just a couple of examples which demonstrate her enthusiasm and hard work.

“Teri-Ann faced some tough competition in these awards and truly deserved her place in the final. The increasingly high quality of applications year on year is a great indication of how apprenticeships are providing employers with business-ready team members capable of making an immediate difference to their business.

“Our apprentices work extremely hard throughout their apprenticeships at the AMTC on programmes designed with potential employers to ensure their skills are relevant. Awards such as this are an important recognition of their commitment, focus and achievements.”

Teri-Ann is now working towards completing her Level 3 Advanced Engineering apprenticeship and progressing onto a Level 4 Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Manufacturing.

Based on the campus of the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) at Ansty Park near Coventry, the Lloyds Bank Advanced Manufacturing Training Centre is currently inviting applications for the next intake of apprentices. There are places for 40 new recruits who will follow the 99 apprentices already taking part in the MTC’s apprenticeship programme.
