Karen Carter Richards Elected to Greater Southeast Management District Board of Directors

Forward Times Publisher to Bring Influence, Rich Legacy and Business and Media Acumen to Local Board
 
HOUSTON, Texas – The Houston Forward Times, the South’s largest independently owned African-American newspaper, announced today that Publisher and Chief Executive Officer Karen Carter Richards has been elected to the Houston Southeast Management District Board of Directors. She was sworn in during a ceremony held on Wednesday, April 13, and joins an esteemed group of local business and civic leaders.

The Houston Southeast Management District was created in 2001 to promote, develop, encourage and maintain employment, commerce, transportation, housing, recreation, arts, entertainment, economic development, safety and the public welfare in the Southeast Houston area. The “District” is bounded by Interstate 45 and U.S. 59 to the north, Main Street to the west, and North MacGregor and Griggs Road to the south.

“It is both an honor and a privilege to be elected to the Greater Southeast Management District Board of Directors,” said Carter Richards. “Both the Greater Houston Southeast Management District and the Houston Forward Times are committed to improving and enhancing the lives of Houston’s residents and keeping them informed. I am excited to continue to carry out my mission of serving the residents of Houston in support of this vibrant community of thriving businesses, historic neighborhoods and cultural attractions.”

Karen Carter Richards took the reigns of the Houston Forward Times in 1981, which previously was under the leadership of her parents, Julius and Lenora Carter. Under her leadership, the newspaper continues to be the strongest and most trusted voice for African Americans in Houston. Additionally, as founder and president of the Julius and Lenora Carter Scholarship and Youth Foundation, Carter Richards continues to groom the next generation of media leaders, and support deserving youth in pursuit of higher education through the awarding of scholarships and internship opportunities to students in the fields of journalism, digital communications and broadcast media.

Carter Richards, who attended the University of Houston and University of St. Thomas, also currently serves as the 1st Vice Chair of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), which is comprised of more than 200 African-American newspapers across the U.S. She is also the recipient of numerous awards and accolades in recognition of her civic involvement and contributions to the local Houston community.
