The company TravelSafer highlights an often overlooked serious risk to workers on our roads

Fleet cars and transport vehicles could be an accident waiting to happen.

You go to work each day assuming the car or delivery van you are driving is roadworthy and safe to get you home to your loved ones that night, but the sad fact is, many don’t make it.

Death or injury caused by motor vehicle accidents is far too common in USA. The average annual fatality rate is 1 in 100,000 deaths for workers. Imagine the financial strain along with the physical and emotional pain injured workers and their families have to endure.

Experts quote contributing factors to accident risk as fatigue, long work hours, delivery pressures, medical conditions, use of prescription and non-prescription medication and distractions such as mobile phone use but there’s one factor often overlooked.

A spokesperson for the company TravelSafer, manufacturer of a digital tire pressure gauge, wants to remind readers that tires underinflated by 25 percent or more, are 3 times more likely to be cited as critical events in the pre-crash phase.

“When tire pressure is too low, too much of the tire is in contact with the road. Underinflated tires have the potential to overheat thus wear prematurely. An under inflation of only 6 psi may seem insignificant, but actually represents about 20 percent of a tire’s recommended pressure and could lead to tire failure or reduce the tread life by as much as 25 percent. In addition, under inflation causes a tire to bend more as it moves, increasing rolling resistance resulting in further build-up of excessive heat, and potential structural breakdown.”

Vehicle safety in large fleets of company vehicles could slip, particularly regular checks of tire pressures. Employers as purchasers of large fleets of vehicles have a responsibility to maintain vehicle safety, and employees have a responsibility to do their own personal checks before taking off for the day.

What’s more, properly inflated tires can improve fuel efficiency by 3.3 percent and save companies up to 11 cents per gallon, and at the same time, reduce tire wear reducing the company’s annual running costs.

It just makes good sense to pay attention to tire pressures.

To save valuable time checking tire pressures, the company TravelSafer has developed a portable digital tire pressure gauge that can be used on cars, trucks, motorcycles and bicycles. It can easily be stored in the vehicle glove box or tool bag so employees don’t need to go searching for a gauge. Its illuminated nozzle and LCD screen makes it easy to use in poor light conditions or for night shift workers.
