Global cytology and HPV testing market is being identified as one of the rapidly evolving market in the field of molecular diagnostics. Rising incidences of cervical cancers and increasing awareness about preventive testing are some of the factors expected to drive the growth of this market. Cytological screening which refers to microscopic examination of cells (function, structure and morphology) has noticeably reduced the incidence of cervical cancers. Currently, HPV tests and Pap test are recommended for cervical cancer screening. In Europe, cervical cancers account for almost 57,000 of the incidents cases and 25,000 deaths annually. Hence, in many of the European countries HPV vaccinations are introduced for women for prevention of HPV infection. Cervarix (GlaxoSmith Kline) and Gardasil (Merck & Co.) are two vaccines which are commercially available for the prevention of HPV infection.

Apart, from vaccination and primary screening some of the treatment options are also available for the treatment of genital warts and precancerous lesions. Such treatment option includes cryosurgery, surgical conization, loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) and laser vaporization conization. Similarly, topical chemicals and drugs are also available for the treatment of precancerous lesions caused by HPV (vaginal, penile, vulvar and lesions). Additionally, in order to reduce the incidence of infection several companies are also striving to launch innovative and differential products into this market. Recently, Roche Diagnostics launched a test (cobas HPV test) in the U.S.

Geographically, North America accounts for the largest share of the global cytology and HPV testing market. Rising incidences of women suffering from cervical cancers each year and favorable government measures that are focused towards proper screening, immunization programs and diagnosing are some of the factors held responsible for leadership position of this region. However, in the near future Asian region and Latin American region is expected to show healthy growth in the near future due to the fact that 80% of the cases diagnosed for cervical cancers globally are reported from developing countries with high mortality rates. The majority of the deaths due to cervical cancers in these regions are reported due to poor healthcare infrastructure and low awareness level.
