Relocation Services Company Announces 20% of Americans Are Planning to Move in 2021

20% of Americans are planning to move in 2021, according to relocation services company.

American lives and lives around the world have been severely impacted by the global coronavirus pandemic, which has resulted in an increase demand in wanting to move with 20% more Americans planning to move than last year. Around one fifth of Americans had moved or knew someone that had moved during the first half of the pandemic in June 2020.

A recent American Migration Report, which surveyed more than one thousand US based participants found that over twenty percent more Americans are planning a move this year, compared to last year, but it is not due to safety concerns relating to COVID-19. Eighteen percent planned to move for work flexibility, being able to work from home they want to reduce their cost of living.

Forty percent of movers are relocating to smaller towns from large cities with more living space being a key deciding factor. Seventy percent of the participants stated that once safe to do so, they were excited to meet new neighbors, get involved in local events and volunteer work in their new neighborhoods.

Interestingly, when compared to the previous year, where more than seventeen percent of relocations were due to safety concerns regarding the pandemic, this year less than thirteen percent are based on coronavirus safety concerns. The main reason for moving is flexibility at work with more remote working arrangements coming into place in companies in a range of industries.

Sue Harrington, the President at Relocation Coordinates International, a leading national and international relocation specialist backed by more than thirty years of experience, said “More than forty five percent of those planning to move in 2021 are doing so to reduce their cost of living, while thirty percent want to move closer to their families. We are seeing a very high demand from those living in city areas, looking to move out to the suburbs and get away from the hustle and bustle. The coronavirus has made this possible with a larger percentage of the working population now working from home.”

With space being a driving factor in many of the relocation decisions, moving out of the city areas and into quieter rural and suburban areas, offers more living space and an increase in outdoor space.
