Floaters Surgery and Syfovre – What is the Link?

The link between Syfovre and floaters surgery in 2023.

Sixteen out of fifty five patients treated with Syfovre developed floaters, according to a report in JAMA Ophthalmology. Syfovre is a prescription eye injection used to treat geographic atrophy. One third of patients treated developed symptomatic floaters. It is believed that the silicone oil droplets from silicone used in the lubrication of the syringe was the cause.

Twenty nine percent of those treated developed floaters. Fourteen patients were symptomatic and had silicone oil droplets during a biomicroscopic examination. The floaters caused more of an inconvenience and there was no observation of any immediate association between the floaters and the patients vision. One patient considered floaters surgery to remove the floaters, while several reported seeing hundreds of floaters.

Floaters are not dangerous, they are more frustrating. Many people learn to live with them and never have to undergo floaters surgery. Other patients struggle to read a book, watch television or go on a computer, often choosing floaters surgery to remove the floaters and give them clear vision again.

Syfovre was only approved by the FDA in February in 2023. It is believed that the viscosity of the eye medication interacts with the silicone lubricant n the syringe. It's not easy finding silicone free lock syringes and could be a challenge for using the drug moving forward.

During a recent interview, Ray Man, the PA to Mahi Muqit, said “Floaters are frustrating, though then are a common eye condition and part of the ageing process. We provide floaters surgery when it impacts the patients quality of life. In most cases patients find that they learn to live and ignore their floaters. We do recommend if they suddenly experience an onset of floaters with flashes of light, they make an urgent appointment with Mr Muqit to have their eyes examined to identify the cause.”
