During a recent interview, the PA to Mahi Muqit, Ray Man said “There have been studies that have investigated pneumatic vitreolysis for macromolecular traction or VMT and they have shown good efficiency, but unfortunately both were terminated due to safety concerns. Pneumatic vitreolysis or PVL is an in office procedure, which could have replaced a vitrectomy, being less invasive and probably cheaper in the long run. Unfortunately more studies need to be carried out before this can be considered for VMT ophthalmology due to to a number of those taking place in the clinical trial experienced retinal detachment or tears, which accounted to twelve percent.”
For now vitrectomy is the best solution for a VMT, which is carried out as a day case at Moorfields Eye Hospital, where Mr Muqit cuts a small hole to remove the vitreous gel and replace it with a temporary solution, reducing the pull on the retina.
