Game Modes in PoE 2:

Standard: The base game with no additional rules. You can trade and play in a party.
Hardcore: Similar to Standard, but your character moves to Standard if they die.
Solo Self-Found (SSF): You cannot trade or play with other players. Everything is self-found.
Hardcore SSF: Combines Hardcore and SSF. If you die, your character moves to SSF.
Ruthless Mode: A PoE 1 game mode with reduced drops and increased difficulty, likely to return in PoE 2.

You can migrate your character from SSF to Standard, but in Hardcore, this requires your character to die. Choose the mode that fits your playstyle—Hardcore for a challenge, Trade League for trading and economy, SSF for solo play, and Hardcore SSF for an extreme challenge. Beginners should start with Trade League for the simplest experience.

Challenge Leagues
Leagues are seasonal content releases adding new features to the game, effectively creating new servers. Most players play in the current League, starting fresh with each new release. Standard/Hardcore/SSF/HCSSF modes are "eternal leagues," where old characters reside.
