Rapid Increase in Demand for Energy Saving Lights

Demand for energy saving lights increases rapidly in 2021

When the incandescent light bulb was first introduced, it make huge chances to the way people have access to electricity when living and working. In the 1970's, questions started arising regarding the wasteful heat the light bulbs generated. Governments around the world focused on promoting energy efficiency, with industrial companies investing in alternatives to support legislations to phase out the incandescent bulb, reducing the waste.

The first alternative introduced was the compact fluorescent light bulb, which was five times more energy efficient than the incandescents, but it was not popular with consumers with many choosing halogen bulbs instead. LED was introduced onto the market with huge potential on carbon emission reductions and fast transitions. With the ability to produce instant light with little heat, the demand started to rise with consumers.

Governments introduced minimum performance and efficiency standards in 2000, which set dates in which the inefficient bulbs were to be phased out, which saw a slow turn towards lower energy options. LED lights use up to ninety percent less energy than the incandescent bulb and sixty percent more efficient than fluorescent lighting. The demand for LED lighting raised dramatically by 2018 by a staggering forty six percent.

The rapid increase in demand for LED is already having a positive impact on energy efficiency, with the lighting demand dropping by almost thirteen percent. The thirteen percent drop accounts for approximately five percent of total carbon emissions around the world. Changing to an energy efficient light bulb can reduce 1,400 million tonnes of CO2 emissions around the world.

Paul Towers, the Director at Saving Light Bulbs, said “The light bulb can show how important it is that every person take action to reduce their carbon emissions. It doesn't matter how small the change is, it will make a difference. Adoption of LED lighting throughout the United Kingdom in homes could save £2 billion in energy bills, while preventing eight million tonnes of carbon emissions being released. Changing to LED in the UK can be repaid within four months. If every single home in Britain made a change to LED, each home would save around £40 over twelve months.”
