Become Less Dependent On Glasses And Contact Lenses With Laser Eye Surgery By A Professional Ophthalmologist

Laser eye surgery in the UK is safe and effective. Ophthalmologist surgeon Sharmina Khan will examine a patient’s eye condition and advise the best treatment for bad eyesight based on eye health, age, budget, and lifestyle.

When deciding upon laser eye surgery the risks and benefits should be considered including the risk to eye health with the use of contact lenses. Laser eye surgery otherwise known as laser vision correction is the use of laser therapy to reshape the cornea (front surface) of the eyes to help the eyes focus better. It can help correct short-sightedness, long-sightedness, presbyopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism and improve blurred vision.

People over 18 years of age can have laser eye therapy if the eye prescription has remained the same condition for approximately 2 years. Lens surgery may be more beneficial if there is a need for glasses in the future.

“Patients who have experienced laser eye surgery may need to have more than one surgery to reach the maximum benefits and achieve the best results. The surgeon will explain the process and discuss various options available,” said Helen Hughson, Practice Secretary, of Sharmina Khan.

There are three main types of laser eye therapy. LASIK, SMILE, and surface laser treatments. LASIK is performed with 2 lasers to open a thin flap on the surface of the cornea and the other to reshape the cornea beneath the surface. The protective flap is smoothed back and remains in place with no need for stitches.

SMILE is a process where the surgeon reshapes the cornea through a small self-sealing hole. Surface laser treatments (PRK, LASEK, and TransPRK) are a procedures where the clear skin that covers the cornea is removed for the surgeon to reshape the cornea using a laser, after the procedure, the skin will grow back naturally.

There may be mild, but persistent discomfort, and artificial tears can help with the healing process where the eyes will recover and feel back to normal between 3-6 months. The patient may experience visual disturbances such as glares from oncoming vehicles if driving at night and can be treated successfully. There may be red patches in the white part of the eye, which fade away within a month or two.

After laser eye therapy, the patient will not need to use prescription glasses or use contact lenses anymore. Patients will find their poor eyesight would have improved dramatically resulting in a permanent effect where eyesight is improved and more focussed.
