According to Super Lawyers, one of the leading attorney rating services in the country, approximately 5-percent of nominated candidates in a given state receive the award.

The Super Lawyer Award is based on a comprehensive patented multiphase selection process which includes peer recognitions, independent research, and professional achievements. There is a 12-point evaluation process during the independent research process. This assessment process includes the settlements and verdicts that they have received in honor of their clients, community service and pro bono work that the candidate has participated in, other awards and achievements that the candidate has earned, as well as the attorney’s bar and other professional organizations’ activities. Additionally, the evaluation process also takes into consideration the candidate’s experience in his or her specific field, scholarly lectures, and written publications, as well as special licenses, among other factors. According to Super Lawyers, these indicators used during the 12-point evaluation process are not treated equally.

According to the rating service, following the 12-point evaluation process and after taking into consideration the candidate’s peer assessments and recommendations, the final stage is the selection process. During this period, “candidates are grouped into four firm-sized categories. Those with the highest point totals from each category are selected.” This allows individual and small firms to compete against other small firms, to allow for a fairer and more balanced rating system. The candidates that do not get selected during this phase may qualify to be chosen in the Super Lawyers Rising Star Award category. While up to 5-percent of candidates in any given state may be chosen for the Super Lawyer Award, only about 2.5-percent of attorneys evaluated for the Rising Star Award are selected.
