Schwartzapfel Lawyers P.C. helped raise awareness for this year’s Wear Red Day through a firm sponsored raffle and matched monetary donations.

A personal injury law firm based in Jericho, New York became a sponsor for this year’s National Wear Red Day, an event dedicated to raising awareness for the prevention of heart disease and stroke among women. The event is held annually in February on the first Friday of the month. Schwartzapfel Lawyers P.C. , the New York-based law firm, announced that the firm raised a significant amount of money through matching employee contributions to help the cause.

“For the 4th consecutive year, our firm supported the American Heart Association and Went Red for Women! It’s a fun, annual event through which we distribute heart-healthy information to the employees as a means to raise awareness of the #1 killer of women and, of course, we all wear red. Raffle sales and individual contributions totaled $285 for the American Heart Association. We matched that amount to donate a total of $570,” said Steven Schwartzapfel, Founding Member of Schwartzapfel Lawyers P.C.

Women are at a higher risk of being diagnosed with heart disease or experiencing a stroke. It is estimated that one in three women die each year due to a heart attack or stroke, according to the American Heart Association. However, many of the risk factors associated with these heart complications can be avoided through lifestyle changes and increasing exercise. According to Mr. Schwartzapfel, “The number of deaths in women that are linked to preventable cardiovascular complications is astronomical. We believe a large part of that is because women simply don’t know the risks to avoid in their day-to-day lives. We wanted to do our part to help raise awareness and reduce the number of deaths among women by supporting this fantastic cause.”

According to the GoRedforWomen.org website , since the first annual National Wear Red Day in 2003 “death in women has decreased by more than 30 percent over the last ten years.” However, the organization still has a long way to go to improve the lives of women nationwide. Their mission is to reduce that statistic even more over the next several years. They firmly believe that through research and education, the number of death in women associated with cardiovascular diseases will continue to improve over the next decade.
