Won in “Innovative Design” category

Bengaluru: Pete Davis won the coveted Tata Memorial Trophy in the innovative design category. This is the third time in a row that won the TMT award. Davis, 39, is considered an architectural genius by many in this arena. Apart from TMT, he had won Peacock medal in the Best Design Firm category by Karnataka Association of Builders, held here last year. The jury recognized Davis’s ingenuity of Birla House Corporate Office in Mumbai. Davis is the recipient of many prestigious awards in fifteen years of his career.

Speaking to journalists after the ceremony, he said “My mother has been an inspiration for me. The garden in front of my childhood home, the small changes she made to it kept our 2 bedroom typical Govt quarter stand form the rest of the other same style houses in the colony. It fascinated me then, it inspires me now”.

Asked about the future of landscaping in India, he mentioned about steps he is taking to make it a popular option today. “Our country is heavily polluted, out capital is listed as one of the most polluted, our PM 2.5 concentrations are risking, we need to ask ourselves if we want to choke ourselves to death or breather clean air?” he remarked.

With rising pollution levels and massive publicity programme undertaken by Govt. soliciting people to plant a tree in home yards, many landscaping solution providers have sprung up all across the city providing a wide range of options & themes to choose from. Landscaping solutions cost anything between INR 10,000 to INR 50,000. Solution providers are also coming up with innovative ways to enable customers visualize the styles even before planting a flower. Computer aided design are used for this purpose. Anil Bajwa, a resident of Jayanagar area remarked “Davis may be very good, but he is also very expensive. Middle class families like us can only dream to hire him”.

On asking Davis about the escalating costs of livings and inflationary trends across all segments of the economy, he retorted “We can’t trade our lives for money..We need clean air, we need aesthetics, we need peace of mind in concrete jungles, we need to embrace nature not reject it”. Davis, always good with answers and with a shrewd business sense dominates the Indian landscaping & gardening corporate market. His firm Life Gardens Inc. bags majority of Govt contracts both at Union and state Govt levels. Numerous awards, trophies are adding to his popularity in public consciousness, Quoting a recent study, he maintains that Indian landscaping market is of $5 billion, marking an average 15% growth annually. He believes the market will expand further with increasing wealth in the hands of Indians and rising aspiration. He further believes vertical development of cities will expand the landscaping market with more people aspiring for environments connect even while living in their high rise environment.
