The Eye Center now uses Kahook Dual Blade treatments for its Glaucoma patients

Columbia, SC, Sept 28, 2019 – Millions of people suffer from glaucoma, a progressive eye disease that can cause vision loss and even blindness. As a leader in glaucoma treatment in South Carolina, The Eye Center once again sets the industry standard by offering the latest technology, The Kahook Dual Blade® (KDB) to its patients.

The typical treatment for glaucoma is called a goniotomy procedure. This is usually performed alongside cataract surgery but can be done by itself. During a goniotomy, the diseased tissue that blocks fluid from leaving the eye is removed. Technology continues to develop to make this procedure safer for women, men, and children. The Kahook Dual Blade is the latest innovation, using a single-use ophthalmic blade that greatly reduces the risk of infections or leaks, and patients don’t require sutures.

Research suggests that patients have a quicker recovery period than compared to the other treatment options for glaucoma. KBD technology also reduces the risks of complications after surgery.

What to expect with KBD at The Eye Center?

The KDB allows Eye Center surgeons to make more precise and targeted incisions to release the intraocular pressure on the eye. The improvements the KDB has made on other glaucoma treatments include:

Surgical-grade stainless steel including a sharp tip for painless entry
Narrow, long shaft that allows surgeons easier access to the anterior chamber
Two blades that allow surgeons to make simultaneous incisions to all infected tissue
KBD includes ramp technology: it lifts the eye tissue and stretches it so surgeons can have the most accurate positioning of the blades
Footplate that creates a smooth motion which helps to prevent tissue damage along the anterior wall of the canal.

The Eye Center has regularly treated glaucoma patients since its inception. Looking to always provide the highest quality eye care and the best treatment outcomes possible for their patients, it’s no surprise that they are among the first to offer KDB as a treatment option.

Unfortunately, glaucoma can’t be cured, but if caught early, regular monitoring and treatments can prevent significant damage and loss of vision. If left untreated, glaucoma can cause permanent vision damage. The disease often doesn’t present many symptoms in its earlier stages, so The Eye Center recommends regular eye examinations to identify any early warning signs.
