The Black Belt Region – Alabama’s Hunting Trophy

Find out why this specific region is such a rich hunting region and what it means to state coffers

Just above the Coastal Plains and at the foothills of the Appalachian, you will find the Black Belt region. This is a name that comes from the rich soil for which the area is known, black with nutrients as every rainy season rinse more from this natural gem into the valley. The rich soil is also the foundation of an abundance of plants and vegetation. Feeding on these plants, you will find white-tailed deer and plenty of wingshooting options and opportunities.

Located in the heart of the Black Belt region is the Westervelt Lodge, one of the largest hunting grounds in the state with more than 12,000 acres of hunting terrain. The location offers the hunter a choice of scenery and it is the perfect location to not only find the kind of target you are looking for and with which you can return home, beaming with pride, but also the most breath-taking scenery. Over recent years, it also turned into one of the most highly reputable corporate retreats in Alabama.

“The region is simply spectacular and what we opted to do is to harness the natural resources we have access to and transform Westervelt Lodge to become the best place for white-tailed deer hunting in all of Alabama. We’ve hosted our first hunting session here back in 1951 and from that moment onwards, we’ve been committed to delivering only the most exceptional experiences and thrilling adventures to all our patrons,” says Steven Carroll, the manager at Westervelt Lodge.

Carrol then further expands on the fact that the lodge is part of a much larger industry. He states that the Black Belt region is so full of natural resources and wonder and that it doesn’t only have rich hunting fields but that the rivers are as alive with fish. Therefore, it serves as the perfect tourist attraction that generates about $1 billion to the state’s annual revenue.

“As time progressed and more hunting lodges like Westervelt Lodge realized the potential of our natural resources and that there is a growing market keen to explore it more and to hone their hunting and fishing skills in the region, this industry simply started to burst out of it seems. What started as a mere fun trip turned into something much larger today. We are part of an industry that is responsible for creating more than 11,000 jobs in the state. While our main focus is on ensuring that every visitor has an excellent experience, we are truly proud to be part of something so big and meaningful to the people calling Alabama home,” Carroll concludes.

About Us

Since we had our first hunt as far back as 1951, our team has always been involved in not making every hunting trip on our property a successful one but also a memorable one. It is why our history speaks of one highlight after another and it is also why so many of our loyal hunters return every year to Westervelt Lodge, to break away from the rush of their normal lives to spend time in nature. It is a time to sharpen their skills and improve their hunting experience, always competing on their previous performance.
