If you are trying to put together an ideal starting XI from among all the professional players on Planet Football, then who better ask than the pros themselves?

And that is exactly what has happened in recent months, as more than 20,000 professional footballers from all over the globe have been voting to decide on the FIFA FIFPro World XI 2014 – this year’s ideal starting XI – which was unveiled at Monday’s FIFA Ballon d’Or Gala.

This was the team selected by their peers:

Goalkeeper: Manuel Neuer
Defenders: Philipp Lahm, Sergio Ramos, David Luiz, Thiago Silva
Midfielders: Angel Di Maria, Toni Kroos, Andres Iniesta
Forwards: Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Arjen Robben

This list includes three members of Germany's FIFA World Cup™ winning side at Brazil 2014, three team-mates who hoisted the 2013/14 UEFA Champions League with Real Madrid and all three FIFA Ballon d'Or nominees, including the eventual winner, Cristiano Ronaldo.

FIFA and the International Federation of Professional Footballers (FIFPro) have been carrying out this selection process for the past six years, inviting footballers from all over the world to freely select one goalkeeper, four defenders, three midfielders and three forwards. The chosen select XI is subsequently unveiled at the annual FIFA Ballon d’Or Gala, which this year was held at the Kongresshaus in Zurich.

FIFA held their awards show on Monday and aside from handing out individual awards they also come up with their version of the All-Pro, naming the best line up of starting players from around the world.

Bayern Munich and Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was named to the World XI and he joins Ronaldo and Messi on the short list for the Ballon d’Or award. The list is full of huge stars, like Angel Di Maria and Andres Iniesta. Di Maria was a Real Madrid teammate of Ronaldo before being transferred to Manchester United and a teammate of Messi with the Argentinian national team.

The FIFA FIFPro World XI revealed; Germany leads the way with three

One of the first happenings at the Ballon D’Or gala on Monday was the unveiling of the FIFA FIFPro World XI, and it’s no surprise that World Cup champion Germany has a trio of players representing club and/or country

Manuel Neuer is between the sticks for this imaginary team after leading Germany and Bayern Munich to championships last season, and he’s joined by his club and countrymate Philipp Lahm on the squad. Bayern’s Arjen Robben is one of the 4-3-3 formation’s three up top

Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos and club teammate Toni Kroos of Germany are, of course, joined by Cristiano Ronaldo, while Lionel Messi and Andres Iniesta represent Barcelona.

Meanwhile, David Luiz and Thiago Silva, now together at Brazil and Paris Saint-Germain are on the list, with current Manchester United midfielder Angel Di Maria.

Notable snubs include Manchester City’s Yaya Toure and Chelsea’s Eden Hazard, as well as Juventus’ Andrea Pirlo.
