Secondary schools have twenty-five minutes to service a thousand pupils their lunch, which means that speeding up the line, enables canteen staff to serve more pupils, cutting transaction time down to five seconds for each pupil. British schools have been using other forms of biometric technology to take payments for many years, such as fingerprint scanners, but the speed in the canteen has made biometric face recognition very appealing.

The technology uses cameras to check against an encrypted face print template, store it on the school servers and numerous schools are now following this trend after the nine North Ayrshire schools are seeing benefits of the technology. This process has been done with consent from the parents. Many children forget their pin codes, others are victims of pin fraud. This technology is beneficial, both to the school and the pupils.
