The International Childhood Cancer Day (ICCD) is a global collaborative initiative to promote awareness about childhood

Every year on February 15th, International Children's Day (ICCD) is organised. Childhood Cancer International came up with the idea in 2001, and the first worldwide awareness campaign took place in 2002.

What is childhood cancer?
Cancer can develop in any part of the body, including the blood and lymphatic systems, the brain and spinal cord (central nervous system), kidneys, and other organs and tissues in children. The majority of the time, the cause of childhood malignancies is unknown. Even if they develop in the same place of the body, childhood malignancies can behave significantly differently than adult tumours.

When healthy cells alter and grow out of control, cancer develops. These cells produce a mass called a tumour in most kinds of cancer. Tumours can be malignant or non cancerous. A malignant tumour is one that has the potential to grow and spread to other regions of the body. A benign tumour is one that can grow but will not spread to other parts of the body.

These aberrant cells very infrequently develop a solid tumour in leukaemia, a blood cancer that begins in the bone marrow. Instead, these cells in the bone marrow force out other types of cells. As a result, the following products are not produced:

Red blood cells are in their natural state. Oxygen-carrying cells transport oxygen to tissues.

White blood cells are the cells that make up the blood. Infection-fighting cells.

Platelets. The portion of the blood that is required for clotting.

Symptoms and signs

Cancer in children might be difficult to detect. Many of the signs and symptoms described below can be seen in children with cancer, and many of them are similar to those seen in common paediatric illnesses. And, in other cases, cancer-affected children do not exhibit any of these alterations. It's also crucial to keep in mind that a symptom or indication could be caused by a medical condition other than cancer.

Weight reduction that continues to be unexplained

Headaches, which are frequently accompanied by vomiting in the morning

Swelling or pain in the bones, joints, back, or legs that persists

A lump or mass in the abdomen, neck, chest, pelvis, or armpit.

Excessive bruising, bleeding, or a rash develops

Infections that are constant, frequent, or persistent

Behind the pupil is a yellowish colour.

Nausea that doesn't go away or vomiting that isn't accompanied by nausea

Constant exhaustion

Changes in the eyes or vision that occur suddenly and last for a long time

Unknown-cause recurrent or persistent fevers

Facts

More than 400,000 children and adolescents under the age of 20 are diagnosed with cancer each year. The rate of survival varies by region, with survival rates as high as 80% in most High-Income Countries and as low as 20% in Low and Middle-Income Countries.
The WHO Global Childhood Cancer Initiative's target goal is to eradicate all pain and suffering for children facing cancer by 2030 and to achieve a survival rate of at least 60% for all children diagnosed with cancer around the world.
