Access for Students Demystifies Disabled Students Allowances

Posted March 11, 2022 by accessforstudents

Access for Students is a company that puts the student's needs first, not only in the physical university environment but also assisting with DSA applications.

To fully understand how this company works it is necessary to acknowledge who they are. They formed in 2018 discovering a gap in the market to help students receive the benefits from applying for extra funding to help them on campus.

Access for Students is a team of assessors who can expertly assist students in getting all their needs met by filling in a DSA application. Lauren Gardener Director of Access for Students added “Please note that we do not handle the applications those are done by the funding body. We do however assist with filling in the applications then after acceptance, we do the assessment of needs.”

The process of filling in DSA applications has been kept simple and the forms are found on the Access for Students website resources page. A company with passion coupled with experience is hard to find, Access for Students is one such company and walks students through the process.

The DSA application comes back in the form of a letter the student presents the letter to Access for Students to book an assessment. During the interview the assessor will explain the needs and how the program is structured. The goal is to establish how best to support the disabled student, there are 4 types of allowances.

The first type of allowance is for the purchase of speciality equipment that is needed to assist the student in their daily university life. If the student already owns equipment for example a motorized wheelchair the allowance can then pay towards insurance on the item.

Access for Students will assess if the applicant needs to have a non-medical helper to assist them with their workload. These helpers can be scribes, facilitators, tutors, or mentors if they are essential to the students’ academic needs then the funds will be made available for this assistance.

The general allowance can be used for items such as printer cartridges or even braille paper, ink, topping up the other allowances or reams of paper. The assessor is there to answer all questions and the students are encouraged to ask to fully understand the role Access for Students is playing in their campus life.

Lastly it is more than likely that some disabilities can prevent students from travelling to school or university easily and special transport or even Ubers or taxis may be necessary. The needs assessor will evaluate the situation and a travel allowance can be obtained.

Access for Students explains all the allowances and how to use them, how to budget and to retain receipts. The service that is made available to these vulnerable students is outstanding and Access for Students has become a well know company and is highly commended for their ongoing care and support of all students on campus.
