FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

July 26, 2024 – Durham, NC – Durham University of North Carolina (DUNC) is excited to announce a series of innovative campus life programs designed to enhance the student experience and promote success both inside and outside the classroom. These new initiatives underscore DUNC’s commitment to creating a dynamic, engaging, and supportive campus environment.

Introducing the Living-Learning Communities

One of the standout features of DUNC’s new campus life programs is the introduction of Living-Learning Communities (LLCs). These residential programs are designed to integrate students' academic and social experiences by grouping together students with shared interests, majors, or goals. Each community offers specialized programming, faculty mentorship, and exclusive resources to foster a cohesive and enriching living experience.

Tech-Enhanced Study Spaces

Recognizing the evolving needs of today’s students, DUNC has invested in tech-enhanced study spaces across the campus. These state-of-the-art areas are equipped with advanced technology, including interactive whiteboards, high-speed internet, and collaborative software, to facilitate group study sessions, research projects, and individual learning. The aim is to create environments that enhance productivity and support academic success.

Outdoor Adventure and Recreation Program

DUNC is launching an Outdoor Adventure and Recreation Program to promote physical well-being and foster a love for nature. This program offers students a variety of outdoor activities, such as hiking, rock climbing, kayaking, and camping trips. These experiences are designed to build leadership skills, encourage teamwork, and provide a healthy balance to academic life.

Arts and Culture Series

To enrich the cultural landscape of the campus, DUNC is introducing an Arts and Culture Series. This program will feature performances, exhibitions, and workshops from local and international artists. Students will have the opportunity to engage with the arts through concerts, theater productions, art exhibits, and guest lectures, fostering a vibrant cultural community on campus.

Peer Mentorship Program

To support the transition to university life, DUNC is expanding its Peer Mentorship Program. This initiative pairs incoming students with experienced upperclassmen who can provide guidance, support, and advice. The program aims to build a sense of community, enhance student retention, and help new students navigate their academic and social lives successfully.

Health and Wellness Initiative

DUNC is dedicated to the holistic well-being of its students. The Health and Wellness Initiative includes expanded mental health services, wellness workshops, fitness classes, and nutrition counseling. The university is also introducing mindfulness and stress-relief programs to help students manage the demands of academic life and maintain a healthy balance.

Campus Sustainability Projects

Sustainability is a key focus for DUNC, and the university is launching several Campus Sustainability Projects. These initiatives include the development of green spaces, recycling programs, energy-efficient buildings, and sustainability education campaigns. Students are encouraged to participate in these projects, promoting environmental stewardship and a commitment to sustainable living.

Dr. Rebecca White, President of Durham University of North Carolina, stated, "Our new campus life programs are designed to create an enriching and supportive environment that enhances the overall student experience. We are committed to providing opportunities that foster personal growth, academic success, and a sense of community. We believe these initiatives will significantly contribute to our students' success and well-being."
