🔁 What Is the DOT Return-To-Duty Process?
Outlined in 49 CFR Part 40, the RTD process includes the following mandatory steps:

SAP Evaluation
A DOT-qualified Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) performs a confidential clinical assessment to determine the nature of the violation and recommend an appropriate treatment or education program.

Compliance with SAP Recommendations
The employee must complete the prescribed treatment, whether it’s counseling, classes, or a substance use program.

Follow-Up SAP Evaluation
Upon successful completion, the SAP conducts a second evaluation to confirm readiness for return.

Return-to-Duty Test
The individual must take a directly observed DOT drug and/or alcohol test. A negative result is required before resuming any DOT-regulated work.

Follow-Up Testing Plan
The SAP provides the employer with a testing schedule that includes at least 6 unannounced tests over 12 months, which may extend up to 5 years.
