‘Primp for Prom’ events scheduled

Thursday, March 24 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., girls may go to the Shattuck High School Cafeteria, to try on and select a free and beautiful prom dress. For those unable to attend the Shattuck distribution of prom dresses, they may go to the one in Woodward.

In the early days of high school proms, the nighttime dances served a similar function to a debutante ball. Proms became the first social event for teenagers.

Teens went from wearing their “Sunday Best” in the early 1900s to wearing more extravagant and elaborate clothes in the 1950s, explained Wikipedia.

“The grandest prom venue was procured by Susan Ford, the daughter of President Gerald Ford, in 1975 when she hosted her senior prom at the White House—the first and only First Kid to hold the honor, even to this day,” said Courtney Kocak in her Bustle.com article, “A Short and Sweet History of the Prom.”

Teenage girls across Northwest Oklahoma are excitedly preparing for their high school dances or proms and each want to choose a beautiful dress to wear.

For those in some parts of rural Oklahoma, the options of beautiful dresses are sometimes limited in their hometowns and they have to travel to a larger area to find their dream dress for their dream dance. Unfortunately for many, the prices are just too high so they miss their high school prom.

“These challenges were noted five years ago by a graduate student at Northwestern Oklahoma State University, leading to the creation of Primp for Prom,” said Dr. Kylene Rehder, associate professor of Social Work at NWOSU in Alva. “This year more than 250 prom dresses have been donated for this event. We have a really large range of styles, designs, and colors, and we have sizes from 0 to 24. A fitting room will be available for trying on dresses.

“It is open to any high school girl. If you can come, we want you to be there. There are two locations. One is in Shattuck and one is in Woodward,”

It will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., April 1 at the High Plains Technology Center.

“Please join us to shop for your free formal gown,” Rehder said. “We are thrilled about the opportunity to provide gorgeous dresses to area high school girls so they can attend their important benchmark events and banquets in style. We even have $1000 gowns. I can’t express how fantastic these dresses are and their high quality."

Several organizations and businesses in northwest Oklahoma are helping make Primp for Prom a success. These include Northwest Oklahoma State University-Department of Social Work, Woodward High School Key Club, Shattuck Public Schools, Stage, and many volunteers.
