UK authorities expect a significant increase in international student applicants by 2026

[UK, 22/12/2022] An increase in international student applicants will cause the demand for student lodgings in the United Kingdom to rise by 2026.

Solid Reputation of UK Colleges and Universities

A report revealed that UK universities and colleges are "held in high regard" by prospective students. The research by UCAS and the College Board found that there is renewed interest in studying in the UK following the pandemic.

UCAS, or the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service, supports fair access to higher education by maintaining a database of courses and investigating the admissions process for universities in the UK.

The report shows that international students overwhelmingly choose to study subjects their parents studied abroad. This suggests that UK institutions have a strong reputation for quality education across generations.

The research showed the following results:

• 80 per cent of Nigerian respondents were interested in attaining career skills.
• 75 per cent of Indian respondents stated that UK HE options are "better quality”

Personalising Applicant Experience

The global higher education community should focus on personalising applicants' experiences to make them feel more connected with UK institutions. By utilising relevant and useful information for each country, universities and colleges can highlight the outstanding opportunities available to international students.

Researchers found that prospective students are using multiple channels to research UK HE options, with open days and interaction with current students being essential factors. This demonstrates the importance of engaging international students early in the university search to ensure they feel connected to their chosen institution.

Overall, the report highlighted the reputation of UK universities and colleges as a top choice for prospective international students. By understanding the needs and interests of international students, institutions can provide a personalised applicant experience to attract talented and diverse study bodies.

EU and Non-EU International Students

Most international students accepted to study in the UK For 2021 come from just seven countries. Chinese students comprise two of every nine offers made out to UCAS applicants. On average, 75 to 80 per cent of EU-domiciled students and approximately two-thirds of non-EU applying to do so via UCAS.

According to UCAS, in 2026, the volume of international applicants could surge by 46 per cent to reach 208,500. This would be in response to an expected 27 per cent rise in the number of applicants overall for that year - amounting to one million people total.

The figure highlights the importance of UK institutions in maintaining a solid reputation and attracting talented international students.
