June’16- According to the present Electricity consumption scenario, India lands at 4th largest energy consumer in the World with total demand for electricity expected to cross 950,000 MW by 2030. India’s overall power generation currently stands at 253,389.5 GW. Heavily dependent on Coal and Lignite based Thermal Power Stations that accounts about 60% of the total power generation capacity. As per the coal ministry, coal reserves are estimated at 301.56 billion as on 01-04-2014. Most coal used is of low grade quality having high ash content of 30-45%. In 2013-14 alone, 172.87 million tons of ash was generated by burning coals. Nearly 85% of fly ash generated in India is disposed of using the lean slurry disposal system. More than 80 million metric tons is being stored in ponds or disposed of in landfills. Statistics reveals that an estimated amount of 225 million tons of fly ash will be stored in more than 1.8 million acres of pond. Disposal of fly ash has numerous negative aspects such as lowered soil fertility, contaminated soil & ground water, health hazards like bronchitis, silicosis, asthma, and lung cancer.

About 10% of India’s GDP is contributed by the construction industry. Clay fired bricks being the prime backbone of the construction industry. India is 2nd largest brick producer in the world with 24 million tons of coal consumed each per year by the brick sector. Red clay bricks are manufactured using top fertile layer of soil and thus causes the brick to exploit the soil leading to erosion and infertility. Unlike the highly unorganized red clay brick industry, AAC Block making industry creates a more formal employment when compared to conventional red clay bricks. AAC Blocks/ Bricks are composed of 60-70% Fly Ash. These Fly Ash composed AAC bricks/blocks are certified green building material and possess eco-friendly attributes. According to the Ministry of Environment & Forests (MoEF) through its notification of 19 September 1997, Govt. of India vide its mandatory notifications (amendments) that are stated as under:
• Within 100Km radius of a Thermal Power Plant
• To use Fly Ash based Building products such as cement or concrete, fly ash bricks, blocks, tiles etc. in all construction projects
• To use Fly Ash in Road or Flyover Embankment construction
• To use Fly Ash in Reclamation of low lying areas
• Financial institutions to include a clause in their loan documents for compliance of this notification
Implementation of Notification would bring about a parity, thereby increasing the consumption of Fly Ash in building materials
