The UK government has recently announced that there are new grants which are designed to encourage the public to change from gas boilers to heat pumps, which are a greener alternative. An interesting factor is that there has been no mention of electric boilers, which are a low carbon option.
The United Kingdom is focussing goon the phasing out of gas boilers, replacing them with low carbon options, such as electric boilers and heat pumps, helping them reach their net zero levels of CO2 by the year 2050. This has resulted in households being offered grants of up to £5,000 for using low carbon heating systems with the target of 5.5 million low carbon options to be installed across the United Kingdom in the next nine years.
Electric boilers are not on the grant list, but they are a great solution for smaller households who want to change to a low carbon solution for their heating needs. There were 1.7 million gas boilers installed across the UK in 2019, a two percent increase on the year before. Eighty percent of UK households are currently using gas heating due to its low upfront and running costs.
The Director at Northcote Plumbing and Electrical, Jon Garvey, said “Electric boilers are very effective with all the electrical energy consumed being converted into heat, unlike gas boilers with are ninety five percent heat efficient. The electric boiler are smaller and can be installed n the home without the need of a flue pipe. They are not really suited for large home heating, but are perfect for smaller homes and apartments.”
Many homeowners are not keen on the heat pumps, due to the changes needs, such as outdoor space for installation or an indoor nit with one or two hot water tanks. The electric boiler is less intrusive and doesn't require such serious heating needs. The hat pumps require more outdoor space, they are expensive and they are challenging for small and older homes, not to mention the concerns regarding the noise they cause.
Heat pumps are not a new technology and are used in many countries around the world, available in a range of sizes and models. The heat pump is more efficient than a gas boiler and are designed to offer steady temperatures throughout the day, rather than a when needed solution, which is offered by gas and electric boilers.
In order to achieve the UK's target for 2035 of net zero electricity, renewable energy additions will be needed as coal powered stations are closed. In sustainable homes, the electric boiler will shine for domestic heating and hot water production.
