Wie beim Überfliegen der Gerätenamen schnell deutlich wird, handelt es sich ausnahmslos um Modelle, die Motorola in den letzten beiden Jahren als Geräte der gehobenen Mittel- oder Oberklasse verkaufte. Günstigere Modelle wie das Moto G der 3. Generation werden nicht genannt. Eine offizielle Stellungnahmen zum Grund für dieses Vorgehen gibt es nicht, aber Spekulationen deuten unter anderem in Richtung nicht länger durch passende Treiber unterstützte Prozessoren.
In der neuen Stellungnahme bekräftigt Motorola außerdem noch einmal, dass die Moto Z und Moto G4 Reihe ab dem vierten Quartal 2016 Android 7.0 Nougat erhalten werden. Wann genau, das ist allerdings wie immer bei Android-Aktualisierungen von Region und Mobilfunkanbieter abhängig.
Google hat gestern Abend nach der Vorstellung neuer Smartphones auch seine Pläne für die In-Home-Vernetzung konkretisiert. Das wichtigste Element dieser Strategie ist der zur Google I/O 2016 bereits einmal vorgeführte, smarte Lautsprecher Google Home, der nun ab Anfang es kommenden Monats - zumindest in den USA - Amazons Echo ernsthaft Konkurrenz machen soll. Ganz neu enthüllt wurde außerdem der WLAN-Router Google Wifi, durch den Funklöcher im heimischen Drahtlosnetzwerk endgültig Geschichte sein sollen.

Genau wie beim Amazon Echo ist die entscheidende Komponente von Google Home kein technisches Detail, sondern die Software. Angetrieben wird der Lautsprecher des Internetriesen von dem digitalen Sprachassistenten „Google Assistant“, der unter anderem auch auf den Smartphones Pixel und Pixel XL zum Einsatz kommt. Dieser sitzt aber natürlich in der Cloud, weshalb zur Verarbeitung von Sprachkommandos zwingend eine bestehende Internetverbindung vorausgesetzt wird.
Die Liste der Features, die Google Home mit Hilfe des Google Assistant bieten kann, fällt im Augenblick so aus wie man es sich vorstellt. Der Lautsprecher kann Wegbeschreibungen nennen, diverse Fragen zu interessanten Themen beantworten, eine Einkaufsliste erstellen oder die Wettervorhersage vorlesen und an Termine erinnern. Darüber hinaus lassen sich über das Gerät auch Songs und Playlists von Diensten wie Spotify oder Google Play Music beziehungsweise Podcasts abspielen.

Google hat zusätzlich zu seinen neuen Pixel-Smartphones das Virtual Reality (VR) Headset Daydream View und das 4K-fähige Streaming-Gerät Chromecast Ultra vorgestellt. Die VR-Brille ist mit einem Preis von 69 Euro hierzulande etwas günstiger als beispielsweise Samsungs Gear VR und wird inklusive Controller ausgeliefert werden. Allerdings muss die enthaltende Technik explizit von einem Smartphone unterstützt werden. Das neue Chromecast Ultra mit Dolby Vision Unterstützung wird laut Hersteller zum US-Marktstart im November 69 US-Dollar kosten.
Anders als beispielsweise Google Cardboard oder ähnliche „VR-Headsets“ der günstigeren Art ist die neue Daydream-Plattform auf Android zugeschnitten und nur mit speziell angepassten Smartphones kompatibel. Als erste Geräte mit Daydream-Unterstützung bewirbt Google die eigenen beiden Pixel-Modelle. In Zukunft soll es allerdings sowohl Smartphones als auch VR-Brillen anderer Hersteller geben, die ebenfalls auf die Daydream-Technologie setzen.
