The need for exceptional eye care goes beyond the outskirts of London

The name of Dr Mahi Muqit, the leading Moorfields eye consultantat the reputable Retina Surgeon UK located at the Moorfield hospital, speaks of excellence in advanced eye care. However, Dr Muqit is not only involved in offering advanced ophthalmic care at the medical clinic in London, he is also an avid lecturer in the field and a man whose heart is deeply committed to volunteer work.
“In 2010, Dr Muqit became a valuable volunteer to Helen Keller International that takes him across the globe to provide advanced eye care in regions of the world where patients suffering from several severe eye concerns don’t have access to proper medical care. During the past couple of years, he has been part of the team providing care to patients through the HKI Diabetic Retinopathy, Training and Treatment program. This program runs in Bangladesh. He is active in two areas there and both of these areas are committed to providing treatment to patients who are suffering from eye concerns caused by diabetes,” says Ray Man, the PA to the practice in London.
Dr Muqit is also involved in training initiatives with other international partners that contribute to the World Health Organisation’s agenda to provide proper eye care to larger parts of the world. This is the same type of service and agenda that the team at Vision 2020 shares, namely to prevent blindness caused by diabetes.
These are not the only areas where Dr Muqit shares his knowledge and expertise in the field. Except for also being a highly regarded lecturer in his field, his volunteer work also reaches out to Africa as he is part of the program that received funding from the Seeing is Believing & Standard Chartered Bank, Innovation Grant Award in 2014. The specific initiative had its focus on improving image grading and took place in Bangladesh, Indonesia and Botswana.
“It is often the case that those who live in poorer communities or undeveloped areas have no access to proper medical care. The result is that these people lose their eyesight completely caused by concerns that would have been easy to address if they only had access to more developed health care. As Dr Muqit is so committed to his field, he is driven to share his services to wider parts of the world and being part of a volunteering initiative enables him to do just that,” Man states as his final thoughts.
