Mahi Muqit remains a top choice for floaters surgery London in 2021.

Eye floaters can be exceptionally frustrating for anyone who experience them. They are shapes that drift across the field of vision. They are small pieces of debris that floats around the vitreous gel in the eye and can look like dots, lines and cobwebs. They are mostly common in those with short sightedness, usually increasing with age.

The eyes are filled with a jelly like substance, which is clear, known as the vitreous. This sits right behind the lens and pupil of the eye, comprising mostly of water with mesh work that holds it together. The vitreous makes up eighty percent of the eyeball. As part of the natural ageing process, the mesh work within the vitreous starts to break down, causing debris that floats around the eye, shadowing the retina.

Seventy percent of adults aged forty to seventy experience PVD (Posterior Vitreous Detachment), which is when the vitreous gel loses the support framework and collapses, peeling away from the retina and causing flashes of light. It can take up to twelve weeks for the flashes of light to subside. PVD causes the floater to be intrusive at first. This type of floater can develop at a younger age, especially in those that have opted for cataract surgery.

Floaters are considered harmless in the majority of cases and are just a natural ageing process in the eye. As your brain gets used to them, they become less obvious. In some rare cases of PVD, the vitreous gel becomes stuck to the retina, causing a retinal tear, which can occur in ten percent of PVD patients. This can cause fluid to fill behind the retina, which causes it to detach from the back of the eye Retinal detachment is rarer than retinal tears in PVD floaters and occurs in one out of ten thousand.

The PA for Mahi Muqit, Ray Man said “Vitreous detachments can pull on retinal blood vessels and if the blood vessel breaks, the jelly fills with blood. This is better known as a vitreous haemorrhage and occurs in some patients with eye floater.
