Retina Surgeon UK specialises in diabetic retinopathy treatment, along with cataract surgery London in 2021.

Diabetic retinopathy is a potentially blinding eye disease. The retina, located at the back of the eye, needs to be healthy in order to enjoy good vision. Light is focused through the retina, which allows us to see. Diabetic patients with diabetic retinopathy may notice some minor changes to their vision as the diabetes causes blood vessels in the retina to change, causing small haemorrhages.

Diabetic retinopathy usually progresses slowly, though as it gets worse it can cause vision loss, normally impacting both eyes. Some patients experience abnormal new blood vessels growing on the retina surface, which leads to bleeding in the eye and potential risk of retinal detachment with global sight loss. Other patients experience a swelling and leaking of the blood vessels, which cause localised damage of the macula with loss of central vision.

Mr Mahi Muqit, a leading cataract surgery and diabetic retinopathy specialist, discusses the natural history of diabetic retinopathy with his diabetic patients, helping them identify the warning signs that the disease could be getting worse. Using an individualised approach to help patients understand the impact of diabetic eye disease and overall vision.

Ray Man, the PA to Mahi Muqit, said “Patients that have developed Proliferative diabetic retinopathy, means that dangerous new blood vessels have grown on the retina surface, and if ignored, they can bleed into the eye. This can result in retina scarring and retinal detachment, which can be detrimental to the patients vision. In these situations, Mr Muqit uses a laser treatment technology, which causes the new blood vessels to shrink, preventing blindness. He also offers targeted retinal photocoagulation therapy for diabetic retinopathy patients.”

Targeted retinal photocoagulation requires a contact lens to be placed in the patients eye with up to ten minutes of treatment, as a single session. This procedure is well tolerated with little after therapy discomfort. Mahi Muqit has extensive experience in laser therapy and has pioneered new laser strategies for diabetic eye disease. He is an active volunteer for Helen Keller International with a passion for diabetic eye disease, travelling abroad to educate medical teams on this particular eye disease.
